iFactor Consulting (my employer) is putting on a webinar next week featuring the Web Maps Connector. There's some pretty cool stuff in there in terms of integrating Smallworld with outside data sources (landbase, weather, satellite imagery, street routing, geocoding, reverse geocoding). If you are interested, please click here for more information.

Determining map_view Pixel DPI
The other day I was trying to figure out the pixel DPI on my
map_view so that I could size a raster_image on the map. I had always thought that !window_system!.screen_resolution() would do that for me. It seemed to work as long as I put in some additional empirical fudge factor. I discovered later that if I am working with map_view, I can use map_view.pixel_size to calculate DPI. map_view.pixel_size returns the size of a pixel in millimetres so to convert that to DPI...
_method map_view.if!dpi
## if!dpi : integer
##
## returns _self's DPI
_return (1/_self.pixel_size) * 25.4
_endmethod

writing Smallworld symbols/styles to JPG images
Recently a question appeared on sw-gis asking how to output your Smallworld styles to some external format.
If you download the SourceForge MagikComponents (http://sourceforge.net/projects/magikcmpnts) [MagikComponents has been moved to https://www.assembla.com/code/magik-components/subversion/nodes/mclib/trunk ] you should see a number of modules that provide results similar to what you are asking or provide examples of how you might render styles to JPG files.

- modules\mclib_style_images provides code to create jpg files from the various style records.
- modules\mclib_case_html_reporter provides code that creates an HTML output for your CASE tool. Part of this code (see case_html_report_plugin.output_style_info_for() ) creates jpeg files of the various geometry field styles.

Pictometry on Smallworld
A press release today by Pictometry announced a collaborative effort with AML Solutions Group that enables customers who use Smallworld 4 Product Suites from GE Energy to use Pictometry software directly from Smallworld 4 Products.
What a great idea! I checked the AML web site and there was no mention yet of this collaborative effort. I am looking forward to seeing a demonstration (or at least some screen snapshots) in the near future. I will check with AML to see what they can "show and tell".
